Spoon Gouges
These specialty gouges are designed for extreme recesses. The spoon shape rotates the angle of the edge allowing the tool to start cutting more perpendicular to the surface of the wood. This is what allows the tool to reach into the deep recess and still be able to start the cut. To end the cut simply flex the shank or lower the handle. These are very handy tools for carvers doing deep relief or hollow-ware.
